Edvard Munch – From disgrace to accolades

Between 2011 and 2012, the travelling retrospective exhibition L'Oeil Moderne was certainly no stranger to the surge of interest among collectors, which was reflected by a 159% increase in its price index (between January 2011 and January 2012). Essentially, the works from between 1890 and 1900 are the most sought-after and represent the artist's best auction results. For many years Edvard Munch was looked down upon as a painter; he was ignored as an engraver for even longer. And yet he produced thousands of prints. It is therefore no coincidence that of the 2,098 lots that have gone up for sale, 1,855 are lithographic works. While few paintings have been sold at auction (142 since 1986), this is partly explained by the fact that, upon his death, he left all of his works to the city of Oslo.....

GERHARD RICHTER

Since the start of 2012, Gerhard Richter has signed four auction results above $15 million! Spearhead of Contemporary German painting, Richter has become the most expensive living artist of our time. Born in 1932 in Dresden, the German artist Gerhard Richter lives and works in Cologne. Since the early 1960s, Richter has produced surprising works using new techniques and exploiting new themes, ranging from photo-realism to abstraction. His career took off when he represented Germany at the 36th Venice Biennale (1972) with 48 portraits based on a series of photographs of famous men.......

DAMIEN HIRST RETROSPECTIVE AT TATE MODERN

Damien Hirst is one oft he most controversial contemporary artists. Some love him, some hate him, but his commercial success is indisputable. Now the Tate Modern in London presents the first major retrospective of Damien Hirst’s work in the UK.

The exhibition spans two decades. On display are early works that are on display at Tate Modern for the first time since the 1980s as well as later works such as the famous shark in formaldehyde and the diamond skull. Among the highlights is the work In and Out of Love (1991), a room full of live butterflies.

Damien Hirst was born in 1965 in Bristol, UK. He lives and works in London and Devon. The show at Tate Modern runs until September 9, 2012.

The art market defied the economic gloom to return 11 per cent to investors in 2011, outpacing stock market returns for a second consecutive year.

The performance of the Mei Moses All Art index, a leading barometer of art returns based mainly on paintings sold in New York and London, beat the total return of the S&P 500 index of US equities by about 9 percentage points. The gap, the largest since 2008, was driven by strong growth in Chinese demand and high prices for the work of popular artists such as Andy Warhol.......
